Description
When to site: It is never too late or too early to put up a nest box, birds nest during spring, But some birds will use them to roost during the winter months.
Where to site: Height from the ground should be 1 to 5 metres, with a clear flight path to the entrance. Site box out of reach of predators (cats and squirrels). Keep nest box away from bird feeders - High levels of activity could disturb nesting pairs.
How to clean: The nest box can be cleaned after the birds have finished breeding, between October and January. Remove old nesting material and scrub clean with hot water.
Be patient: It may take a year or two for the box to be used, but if a box is not used for several years in succession it may be worth moving the box to a more suitable location.
